How to Choose the Right 1st Dance Songs

Wondering how to select the right song for you and your partner?  Don’t worry; we’ve got a straightforward guide on choosing a 1st dance song that perfectly matches your unique love story.

  • Don’t focus on predictable options: Who said you have to waltz to a classic love ballad? Your 1st dance should reflect your personality, and if that means breaking tradition, so be it! Don’t be afraid to choose a song that might not be on every wedding playlist. Whether it’s a rock anthem or a funky groove, if it feels right, it is right. For instance, consider surprising your guests with a dance routine that you’ve been secretary practicing. Trust us; they’ll be talking about it for years!
  • Test the song out: Before making your final decision, give your chosen song a test run. Set the mood, clear some space in the living room, and have a mini dance session. This trial will help you gauge how well the song flows with your dance style and whether it really nails down the romantic theme you’re going for. Also, it’s an excuse to dance in your PJs!
  • Walk down memory lane: Your 1st dance is an intimate moment, so why not make it personal? Consider incorporating elements of your love story into the song choice. It could be a tune from the first concert you attended together or the song playing during your memorable first date. Creative Twist: If you have a favourite movie or TV show, check if there’s a romantic theme that could serve as your dance song.

What to Avoid When Choosing 1st Dance Songs

As much as we love a good laugh, there are a few pitfalls to sidestep when choosing your 1st dance song. You don’t want your dance floor to turn into a cringe-worthy episode of a reality show 😬

  • Forcing with the classics: Classics are timeless, but that doesn’t mean they’re a one-size-fits-all solution. If “Unchained Melody” doesn’t resonate with you or your partner, skip it. Golden Rule: Your 1st dance should be special to you and your partner. It’s best to sit down and carefully run through your options to pick the right one.
  • Say no to speed metal: While we appreciate a good headbang session, speed metal might not be the best choice for a slow and romantic 1st dance. Save the intense guitar riffs for the after-party (unless, of course, you’re planning an epic air guitar performance mid-dance!) Remember, slow dancing and speed metal don’t mix well. Your guests might appreciate their eardrums intact.
  • Steer clear of super complicated choreography: You’ve been practicing those intricate dance moves in front of the mirror for weeks, but trust us, less is more. Steer clear of songs that demand Broadway-worthy choreography unless you’re secretly auditioning for “Dancing with the Stars.” Your dance routine doesn’t really have to be perfect, so please – just have fun with it!

The #1 problem clients face...

As I’m sure you’re aware, we live in a world where people fear commitment. People leave all of their options open, because they’re afraid they might end up loosing out on a future opportunity that might be superior to what is right in front of them.

Yet this way of thinking is wrong… But why?

Because by failure to commit to something, the best options available become unavailable. What we thought was a sure thing, ends up becoming a missed opportunity. Through our deliberate action of inaction, we’re soon presented with second-tier options. Options that you wish you could’ve avoided in the first place. But you’ve already committed to the idea of hiring a DJ, so you end up going through with it anyway, and you choose whoever is available because you don’t want to completely miss out. But you know in your heart it didn’t feel like the right choice. And when the money is spent, and the performance is over, you’re disappointed. And you tell yourself: never again. Yet just like a teenager who claims to never drink again after binge drinking the night before, we end up in a cycle of never committing, and always being stuck with bad alternatives. Deep down inside, we’re unhappy. And we’re left with regret.

Amazing opportunities don't last long.

DJing.ca only performs at 125 corporate events per year,  and performs in front of companies such as McLaren, FlyOver Canada, and ActiveState. As we get more referrals each year, the number of calls & emails continues to grow.

And with good reason.

Having a 100% satisfaction rate, we keep getting referrals. That’s what happens when you are Vancouver’s best DJs.

I know a lot of other people claim that, but here’s the facts:

We spent an entire year, or 4,000+ hours (yes, we’re work-a-holics) searching through 350 DJs, only to find the top 15 that met our expectations based on personality, experience, and professionalism. If any DJ doesn’t receive a 5/5 star rating from clients (just like yourself), they do not meet the requirements of our contract and can no longer work with us.

And here’s the kicker…

To date we haven’t had to remove anyone.

If you want your event to be truly amazing, don’t hesitate. Fill out the form, we’re here to help. Let’s work together to make your vision come to life.
